"To talk about peace, I think it’s important to clarify what peace is. Often times, we think of peace as something that’s conditional. It’s a quiet house after a long day. It’s the stillness in a museum without a lot of patrons. Or maybe, it’s relaxing in a hammock listening to the sounds of the ocean. Peace is all of those things, for sure, but it’s also our natural state. We can have peace as in the opposite of war, but we can also have peace in the face of war, chaos, and calamity. I think that it’s when we face those challenges that we really make peace a practice.

Putting peace into practice for me begins with acceptance. There’s the necessary acceptance of myself and my current limitations and capabilities, and then there’s the acceptance of the world around me, the situation. Practicing yoga through asana helps me realize how to accept myself. Practicing meditation helps me realize how to let go of the way I feel the world should be, and then I can accept what’s here. When I can accept what’s here, I know I can do something about it.

We live in a world where if we want something, we have to be willing to embody it. This practice of peace is something that gets applied to all of my relationships. I do my best to live in a way that supports peace for everybody. I eat a plant based diet, I speak about dismantling systems of oppression, I advocate caring for the environment. For me, to practice peace is to live in a way that supports others living peacefully."
